2021 News Updates

December 29, 2021. Time to reform wildlife governance. This is a very well written article. It is not about me but about politics in WA state.

December 25, 2021. Boston Globe Magazine: This scientist bottle-fed and bayed with coyotes. Was he sidelined for loving them too much? This article is a summary of the plight of my professional life in the past decade plus of not doing research. It is a well written piece, but unfortunately, the story doesn’t quite dive into the obstruction part of my Coywolf book, which I amply described therein. Many of us were hoping for the article to describe the seemingly criminal behavior of MassWildlife in blocking research from a productive scientist with supposed nitpicking violations that I committed, all while allowing the literal slaughter of the same animal. Rather, it focuses more on myself and my lack of research.

November 7, 2021. Controversial coyote hunting contests to remain legal in Nevada. This is sad news and is mainly because of the extreme bias given to extremist hunting groups. The vast majority of the public in any state do not participate in these “contests”.

October 26, 2021. I am pleased to release my newest, free e-book: Yellowstone Wildlife during Summer.

I have a love affair with Yellowstone. It is an amazing place with tremendous scenery, awe inspiring geologic features, and abundant wildlife, along with great people happy to be in the world’s first national park. I have been to the park 24 times up through early 2021, for a total of 213 days. I have written four books related to my experiences: My Yellowstone Experience (2013), The Trip of a Lifetime (2020), Christmas in Yellowstone (2021), and Mud, I mean April, in Yellowstone (2021). However, because the majority of people travel to national parks in the summertime, I thought a tome about wildlife in Yellowstone during the busy season would be a unique contribution to the literature, and would be personally meaningful to the many tourists who visit the park during the busy season to seek out the park’s famous fauna.

This major project came about, in part, because many of my Facebook friends (including family members) continue to be enchanted with the pictures that I post when I travel. For this pictorial montage, I combed through about 7,000 images from my 7 most recent summertime trips and select files from other trips. I chose my best 661 pictures during the summertime for this book.

20 October 2021. That Girl in The Morning Chats With Dr. Jonathan Way About Coyotes On The Cape. This was an interview that I did a couple of days ago with Cape Cod’s country music station.

14 October 2021. Fate of the Northwest Colorado Wolf Pack remains a Mystery. This is a very interesting article. Hopefully federal protections for wolves will return to allow populations in Wyoming to build up and disperse south to Colorado.

10 October 2021. All about Quincy (MA) Podcast. This is a 45 minute interview/podcast that I did with the host, John Melley. It was well done and the sound is very good!

1 October 2021. Wolves in Maine? This is a fantastic 2 min video that myself and 2 other colleagues have worked on in our documentation of wolves inhabiting Maine. We have already had a scat come back as 85% wolf. It seems very probable that the gray individual in this video is a wolf as it is stockier than a typical eastern coyote (which already has wolf genes), has a blocky head, and a shorter tail. These are all characteristics of wolves vs. coyotes, even eastern coyotes/coywolves. You can be the judge yourself!

1 September 2021. Becoming a Wolf Biologist. This is a great article, published by the International Wolf Center, about how to become a wildlife biologist.

23 August 2021. I am pleased to release my newest book: Mud, I mean April, in Yellowstone. Yellowstone is an absolutely amazing place and I hope this collection of 430 pictures from a 9 day trip in early spring clearly articulates that. Nature is in transition from winter to spring during most of April (and into May) so I love the diversity of pictures found in this book from springtime looking images to mornings with fresh, winter-like snow. April is the mud season where much of the landscape is either melting or melted snow. This produces hazardous conditions with lots of slippery mud or even more slick ice which is especially common on trails that are already well worn into the ground; hence the odd but hopefully comical title of this book. You will see many pictures related to this subject in addition to the abundant wildlife and gorgeous scenery. To increase access for all people, rich or poor, majority or minority, I am offering it for free to anyone in the world who wants to read it in an Open Access format, meaning it is free for anyone to download in a pay-it-forward format.

16 August 2021. How to deal with coyotes? ‘Stand your ground and be aggressive’. This is a very well written and level-headed article about the recent aggressive encounters with eastern coyotes in Massachusetts in a bizarrely “active” month with lots of incidents throughout the state. It is refreshing to not see hysterical news coverage and level headed advice from MassWildlife and other individuals. “There have been two coyote bites in the past week, but those were the only bites this year.”

22 July 2021. The federal government must step in to save America’s wolves: The predators are under assault, particularly in Idaho and Montana. This is a great article coming from a Montana resident. Super well written and summarizes a lot about the political bias of politicians out west.

27 June 2021. And still the song dog sings. This is a good article on how coyotes are still doing well in the nation, and increasing in urban areas, despite archaic laws allowing their killing.

17 June 2021. It is with great excitement that I release my newest picture-oriented book, Christmas in Yellowstone! Christmas in Yellowstone was a great nature film, a bucket-list dream of mine to one day go out there during the holidays, and then in 2020 it became a reality. Yellowstone is an absolutely amazing place and I hope this collection of >250 beautiful pictures during the 2020 holiday season clearly articulates that. I wrote this as an e-book to maximize the book’s exposure as much as possible. To increase access for all people, rich or poor, majority or minority, I am offering it for free to anyone in the world who wants to read it in an Open Access format, meaning it is free for anyone to download in a pay-it-forward format.

16 June 2021. Wildlife Management: The Illusion of No Other Path. This is a very nice and detailed article exposing the consumption (hunting) bias associated with wildlife management in the U.S.

15 June 2021. In exciting news, I just today added 44 pages to my “Northeastern National Parks” book, which really fleshes out Katahdin Woods and Waters National Monument which I hope one day will become Maine Woods National Park.

11 June 2021. End wildlife killing contests. This is a very well written article coming out of Virginia.

17 May 2021. More Than 100 Scientists Ask Biden Administration To Restore Protections For Gray Wolves: Researchers Argue Wolves Haven’t Recovered And Face Threats Of ‘Hostile Treatment’ Under State Management. I am pleased to be one of those scientists that has signed the letter and hope the Biden Administration will listen. Here is another article on the same subject.

17 May 2021. Spirit Crusher. This is a great, direct attack at Montana’s new Governor Gianforte.

16 May 2021. Manage man, not wildlife: In the battle over wolves and other animals in the American West, we must chart a new way forward. By Stephen Capra and Connie Poten. This is a very important article about special interest and corrupt group in charge of our nation’s wildlife.

16 May 2021. Let’s stop slaughtering innocent wildlife, in Montana and beyond. A great article about what is happening with wildlife management in the western U.S.

8 May 2021. Letter to the editor: Allow coyotes’ coexistence and treat them with respect: L.D. 1265 – a proposed ban on hunting coyotes at night and with bait and dogs – would allow for healthy Maine ecosystems with natural predators. This is a great article written by Bob Goldman.

20 March 2021. Breaking News! Eastern Coyote Research releases a new e-book, Coywolf!

Posted on March 20, 2021 by Jonathan Way. It is with great excitement that Eastern Coyote/Coywolf Research founder Jonathan (Jon) Way, Ph.D., releases his new book (click on link to go to the new book) Coywolf: Eastern Coyote Genetics, Ecology, Management, and Politics. He wrote this as an e-book because, as a biologist who has made studying eastern coyotes/coywolves his life’s work, Jon wanted to maximize the book’s exposure as much as possible. He is offering it for free to anyone in the world who wants to read it. This is the culmination of years of work and delves deeply into eastern coyote ecology, behavior, and genetics. This project was the result of a labor of love that turned into a real-life nightmare in recent years. Thus, it has evolved to include management and politics because it’s important to understand the regressive policies that dominate predator management and the negative consequences many biologists face when they try to accurately portray predators in the context of wildlife management.

2 February 2021. Exciting/Breaking news! Eastern Coyote/Coywolf Research makes books free Open Access Downloads to increase access to books, and Other News. Read more below and in the 2/2/21 link (above):

In an effort to increase access, Eastern Coyote/Coywolf Research has made my the following e-books free, Open Access which ensures that anyone in the world can read this book: The Trip of a Lifetime and Northeastern U.S. National Parks.

In additionally exciting news, the founder of Eastern Coyote/Coywolf Research, Jonathan (Jon) Way, is finishing another major e-book, Coywolf, which will soon be available on this website. That book will be nearly 300 pages and will include hundreds of pictures and will discuss eastern coyote ecology, genetics, management, and politics. Lastly, in a 3rd major initiative after the publication of the 2 e-books as Open Access, and the finishing of Coywolf – a major treatise on the eastern coyote, Jon plans on soon starting another e-book based on his trip to Yellowstone National Park over the holiday season. It is tentatively going to be called Christmas in Yellowstone! More soon on both of these endeavors.

12 January 2021. Levels Of Stress Hormone In Saliva Of Newborn Deer Fawns May Predict Mortality. A fascinating study showing that predators might not be as important to deer fawn mortality as previously thought.

11 January 2021. New commissioners and lawsuits have some saying hunting is under attack in Washington. Nationwide, wildlife management is coming under attack at being too special interest based and focused on hunters. This is changing, to my delight.
